  • Premium Fuel Prices Surge Amid Global Supply Concerns

Premium Fuel Prices Surge Amid Global Supply Concerns

Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of premium petrol and diesel from April 1, reflecting the impact of global supply disruptions. The price of IndianOil XP100 petrol has risen by ₹11 per litre, reaching around ₹160 per litre.

Premium diesel has also seen a price hike, with rates increasing marginally from ₹91.49 to ₹92.99 per litre. Despite these revisions, the prices of regular petrol and diesel remain unchanged for now.

Fuel retailers, including Indian Oil Corporation, have attributed the increase to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting crude oil supply, particularly in the Middle East.

The price of commercial LPG has also gone up significantly. A 19-kg cylinder now costs ₹2,078.50 in Delhi after a steep hike of ₹195.50, continuing last month’s upward trend.

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices also experienced volatility. Although an initial sharp increase was expected, the final revision was moderated following discussions between oil companies and government authorities, limiting the overall impact on the aviation sector.

The latest price adjustments underline how global uncertainties continue to influence domestic fuel markets, potentially adding to cost pressures across transport and commercial sectors.

  • Weak Budget Planning Leaves Large Funds Unspent in Odisha

A recent report has raised serious concerns over the quality of budget planning by the Odisha government, pointing to a significant gap between projected allocations and actual spending.

According to findings by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, the state’s budget estimates have not been realistic, leading to consistent underutilization of allocated funds. While the government has been increasing its annual budget size, it has struggled to spend the funds effectively within the financial year.

For the 2024–25 financial year, the state initially proposed a budget of ₹2,75,613.86 crore. This was later increased with a supplementary allocation of ₹12,155.74 crore, taking the total budget to ₹2,87,769.60 crore. However, actual expenditure stood at ₹2,31,613.37 crore, leaving a substantial ₹56,156.23 crore unspent—about 19.5% of the total budget.

The report highlights that such a large gap reflects weaknesses in financial planning, execution, and monitoring. It also noted that departments failed to surrender unspent funds amounting to ₹2,815.91 crore, further indicating lapses in fiscal discipline.

The audit body emphasized that unrealistic projections and poor expenditure management are key reasons behind this trend. Experts suggest that better planning, timely implementation, and stronger oversight mechanisms are essential to ensure that public funds are utilized efficiently and effectively.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted Odisha’s unique legacy as India’s first linguistically formed state. He extended warm greetings to Odias living both within the state and across the globe, acknowledging their contribution to preserving the state’s heritage and identity.

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming Odisha into a developed and prosperous state by 2036, when it will complete 100 years of its formation. • Bhubaneswar Opens Global Visa Centre for Easy Travel

Bhubaneswar has taken a significant step toward improving access to international travel services with the launch of a Global Visa Application Centre in the city. The new facility is set to simplify the visa application process for residents of Odisha, who previously had to travel to metro cities for similar services.

The centre will initially provide visa application support for a wide range of countries, including the United Kingdom, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Estonia, Egypt, Morocco, and Malta. By bringing multiple services under one roof, the facility aims to reduce both the time and effort required for applicants.

Officials say the centre is designed with a focus on efficiency and convenience, offering streamlined procedures and quicker processing timelines. Applicants will benefit from organized documentation support, biometric services, and guidance throughout the application process.

The move is being seen as part of a broader effort to strengthen public service infrastructure in Odisha and make global opportunities more accessible to its people. With easier access to visa services, more residents are expected to explore opportunities in education, tourism, and business abroad.

The launch of this centre marks another step in positioning Bhubaneswar as a growing hub for modern services and international connectivity.

  • Diageo India Supports Godawan Conservation Initiatives

Apr 1: Diageo India (United Spirits Limited), has been working extensively in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan with the Gramoday Samajik Sansthan (GSS), Government AgenciesConservation Bodies, and local communities to strengthen on-ground conservation efforts for one of India’s most critically endangered species, the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), also known as Godawan

As part of India’s broader conservation efforts under Project GIB (Godawan), these sustained interventions have contributed to a significant milestone, the birth of a Godawan chick in Gujarat after more than a decade, as highlighted by the Government of India.

    Sustained Conservation Efforts
In Rajasthan, GSS, supported by Diageo India since 2023, has been actively supporting habitat and ecosystem strengthening initiatives in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), the Rajasthan Forest Department and local communities. Key interventions include grassland development, predator sterilization, creation of safe enclosures, provision of safe drinking water sources, and deployment of a specialized safe transportation vehicle to support conservation operations in the region. These on-ground efforts have played a critical role in supporting the broader conservation ecosystem for the species.

    Enabling Cross-State Conservation Outcomes
Building on this foundation, the recent “jumpstart” conservation approach, led by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in collaboration with the State Forest Departments of Rajasthan and Gujarat and WII, has expanded efforts to Gujarat. The “jumpstart” approach involves placing surrogate eggs with suitable female birds to foster and raise chicks, helping accelerate population recovery in regions where breeding has been limited.

As part of this initiative, the safe transportation vehicle supported by GSS and Diageo India enabled the secure movement of a captive-bred egg from Rajasthan to Gujarat. The operation involved a road journey from Sam in Rajasthan to Naliya in Gujarat to ensure optimal conditions for the incubated egg. This led to the successful hatching of a chick on March 26, now being nurtured by its foster mother, marking the first such sighting in Gujarat in over a decade.

    A Collaborative Approach
This progress reflects a strong collaborative model involving government agencies, scientific institutions, NGOs, local communities and the private sector.
Brij Mohan Gupta, Deputy Conservator of Forest & Wildlife, Jaisalmer, said: “Long-term conservation of the Godawan bird depends on sustained efforts in core habitats like Rajasthan. Partnerships with NGO’s, local organizations and local communities are critical in strengthening implementation and community engagement at the grassroots level.”

Devashish Dasgupta, Corporate Relations Director, Diageo India (USL), said: “We are proud to support Gramoday Samajik Sansthan in their sustained conservation efforts of the near extinct Godawan bird. The project has been making steady progress in strengthening conservation efforts over the years. This milestone demonstrates how partnerships and consistent, on-ground action in critical habitats can enable meaningful conservation outcomes beyond regional boundaries.”

Shri. Kedar Shrimal, President and Founder, Gramoday Samaajik Sansthan, said: “Our work in Jaisalmer has focused on strengthening the ecosystem required for the long-term survival of the Godawan bird. The recent milestone seen in Gujarat reinforces the importance of sustained, on-ground efforts and collaborative action in enabling conservation outcomes across landscapes.”

As India continues its efforts under Project GIB, sustained conservation work in core habitats such as Rajasthan, combined with strategic expansion to new landscapes, offers renewed hope for the recovery of the Godawan population.
