ZEISS India shares insights on the Intersection of Optics, Creativity and the Art of Portrait Photography

Ahead of World Photography Day, Kunal Girotra, Regional Head, Photo & Sports Optics – India, South-East Asia & SAARC (ZEISS Photonics and Optics Division), shares his perspective on the evolving art of portrait photography and how advances in optics and imaging technology are enabling photographers to translate their creative vision with greater precision.

“A great portrait is more than just a technically well-executed photograph. It is about capturing a moment, a personality and an emotion in a way that allows the viewer to connect with the subject. While creativity and the photographer’s vision remain at the heart of portrait photography, technology and optics play an equally important role in translating that vision into an image,” said Kunal. 

Seeing Beyond the Frame

Portrait photography has evolved significantly, with photographers today having access to sophisticated cameras, lenses and imaging technologies that offer greater control over framing, focus and perspective. Yet, the fundamentals of creating a compelling portrait remain rooted in understanding light, composition and, most importantly, the person behind the lens.

The choice of lens, focal length and aperture can significantly influence the character of a portrait. A longer focal length can help create a natural perspective while isolating the subject, while a wider aperture can create a shallow depth of field, allowing the subject to stand out against a softly blurred background.

However, technical specifications alone do not make a portrait memorable. The photographer’s ability to understand and use these tools in a way that complements the subject and the story they want to tell is what brings an image to life. 

The Power of Light and Composition

Light remains one of the most powerful creative elements in photography. Its direction, intensity and quality can influence the mood of a portrait, bring out details and add depth to an image. Whether working with natural light or a controlled studio setup, understanding how light interacts with the subject allows photographers to make deliberate creative choices.

Composition plays an equally important role. The positioning of the subject, the relationship between the foreground and background, and the use of negative space can shape how a viewer experiences an image. A thoughtful composition naturally guides the eye while keeping the subject at the centre of the visual narrative.

Creating an authentic portrait often begins before the shutter is pressed. Establishing a comfortable environment, understanding the subject and allowing genuine expressions to emerge can transform a photograph from simply documenting a face to telling a story. 

“Portrait photography is ultimately about seeing the person behind the image. Technology provides the tools, but it is the photographer’s ability to understand light, composition and emotion that transforms a technically good photograph into a compelling portrait. The role of optics is to translate that creative intent as faithfully as possible,” added Shah.

For photographers, understanding their equipment while developing their own visual language can open new avenues for experimentation from exploring different focal lengths and apertures to experimenting with perspectives, lighting and depth.
