Puri, Oct 15 (UDN): The sacred Panchuka period, one of the most significant phases of the holy month of Kartik for devotees of Lord Jagannath, will be observed for only four days instead of the usual five this year due to a tithi kshaya — the omission of a lunar date in the Hindu calendar.

Why Is Panchuka Observed for Only Four Days in 2026? Know the Reason

The development was discussed during a meeting of the Chhatisha Nijog, the traditional body representing servitors of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, which reviewed arrangements for the upcoming month-long Kartik rituals.

According to Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida, the special rituals associated with Kartik will be observed at the Shree Jagannath Temple from October 22 to November 24, 2026.

Daily Rituals to Begin Early

As part of the arrangements, the temple doors will open at 4 am every day during the Kartik period, followed by the scheduled daily rituals. The deities will be adorned in the special Radha Damodar Besha between 6:30 am and 7:30 am. The special Bala Dhupa ritual will also be performed throughout the month.

The month will feature several important religious observances, including the famous Harihara Besha of Lord Jagannath, scheduled for November 16.

Why Is Panchuka Only Four Days This Year?

Panchuka traditionally refers to the final five days of Kartik, which hold special religious significance for devotees observing Kartik Brata. During this period, devotees undertake prayers, fasting and other religious practices, while thousands visit Puri to witness the special rituals of the deities.

However, this year, the occurrence of tithi kshaya has resulted in the loss of a lunar date, reducing the Panchuka observance to four days. Temple authorities have also indicated that the Bankachuda Besha of the deities will not be performed this year because of the omission of the Dwadashi tithi.

Kartik Brata Holds Special Significance

Kartik is regarded as a particularly auspicious month in the Hindu religious calendar, especially in Odisha, where devotees follow traditional observances and visit temples to offer prayers.

At the Shree Jagannath Temple, the month is marked by special rituals, distinctive adornments of the deities and an increased influx of pilgrims. The Panchuka period draws particular attention as devotees seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath during these concluding days of Kartik.

The special arrangements announced for 2026 are aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of the month-long rituals and accommodating devotees visiting the holy town of Puri.
