New Delhi, Aug 11: India’s merchandise exports reached a record $129.6 billion in the first quarter of FY 2026-27, giving the country’s trade sector a strong start to the financial year and reflecting the expanding presence of Indian products in global markets.

The latest export performance comes at a time when international trade is navigating several challenges, including geopolitical tensions, changing demand patterns, fluctuations in energy prices and continuing adjustments in global supply chains.

Despite these uncertainties, Indian exporters have continued to find opportunities overseas. The strong quarterly figure points to growing demand for Indian products and the increasing ability of domestic businesses to serve customers across different markets.

Exports create opportunities beyond trade

A rise in exports can have a wider impact on the economy. When overseas orders increase, businesses may expand production, purchase new equipment, hire additional workers and invest in technology.

The benefits can extend beyond large companies. Small and medium-sized enterprises that become part of export supply chains can gain access to new customers and opportunities for growth.

From manufacturing units and logistics companies to ports, transport operators and service providers, a healthy export ecosystem supports activity across several parts of the economy.

Greater focus on value-added products

India’s longer-term export ambitions are increasingly linked to strengthening domestic manufacturing and encouraging businesses to produce more value-added goods.

Improved infrastructure, efficient logistics, reliable supply chains and access to modern technology can help Indian companies compete more effectively on the international stage.

Diversifying export destinations is also important. Reaching a wider range of markets can reduce the impact of a slowdown in any single region and give businesses greater flexibility.

Imports remain important to the economy

India’s trade story cannot be viewed through exports alone. The country also imports crude oil, machinery, electronic components, industrial materials and other products that support domestic consumption and production.

International commodity prices, particularly crude oil, can therefore influence the country’s overall trade balance. Some imports, however, also provide essential inputs for Indian industries and help businesses expand their manufacturing capabilities.

A promising start to FY27

The record first-quarter merchandise export figure provides an encouraging foundation for the rest of FY27. Maintaining this momentum will depend on how effectively Indian businesses respond to global demand, production costs and changing international trade conditions.

Continued investment in infrastructure, technology, skills and manufacturing capacity could further strengthen the country’s position in global supply chains.

For India, the latest export milestone represents more than a rise in the value of goods shipped abroad. It reflects a broader economic opportunity — to build stronger businesses, create more jobs and establish Indian products more firmly in markets around the world.
