NABARD Brings India’s Rich Handloom Heritage to Mumbai

Mumbai, Aug 08: In a significant initiative to connect India’s rich handloom heritage with markets and empower weavers, NABARD organized a three-day National Handloom Day Exhibition-cum-Sale in Mumbai. Held from August 5 to 7 at NABARD’s Head Office in Bandra-Kurla Complex, the event showcased products representing 15 renowned handloom traditions from across the country.

Maharashtra’s Paithani, Telangana’s Pochampally Ikat, Rajasthan’s Kota Doria, Odisha’s Sambalpuri, Bihar’s Bhagalpur Silk and West Bengal’s Kantha Stitch were among the traditional weaving crafts that attracted visitors. The exhibition also provided an opportunity to purchase products directly from producers. Several of the showcased products are associated with Geographical Indication (GI) tags, reinforcing their authenticity and distinctive identity.

According to NABARD, “Connecting producers directly with customers and markets is an important step towards creating better market opportunities for artisans and weavers.”

The Buyer-Seller Meet held on August 6 further strengthened opportunities for new business partnerships and long-term market linkages among artisans, producer groups and institutional buyers.

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7. The occasion not only honours the skill and craftsmanship of India’s weavers but also reinforces the spirit of an Atmanirbhar Bharat and the importance of sustainable rural livelihoods.
