18th August 2025: Once seen as a challenging and life-limiting blood cancer, multiple myeloma is now increasingly being managed with success, thanks to early diagnosis and targeted treatment approaches. Affecting nearly 10% of all blood cancer patients, this condition arises from abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrowโ€”white blood cells responsible for helping fight infections.

“Multiple myeloma weakens bones, disrupts blood production, and can severely impact kidneys and immunity if not diagnosed early,โ€ explains Dr. Jinesh Singhavi, Consultant โ€“ Medical Oncology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane. โ€œBut with advanced therapies now available, patients can experience remission and resume a high quality of life.โ€

The symptoms of multiple myeloma are often subtle and include bone pain, fatigue, fractures, anemia, and recurrent infections. Many patients are only diagnosed after a fracture or unusual blood test result. Investigations include blood/urine analyses, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging such as MRI or PET scans.

Dr. Singhavi shares the story of a 64-year-old woman who presented with a fractured femurโ€”a common but serious consequence of myeloma-related bone weakening. She had been bedridden for nearly a month, unable to walk or perform daily activities due to pain. Once diagnosed with multiple myeloma, she was promptly started on a targeted therapy regimen, designed specifically for her condition.

“Within a month, she was able to stand. By the second month, she began walking independently. And by six months, she had achieved clinical remission,โ€ adds Dr. Singhavi. โ€œToday, she walks over a kilometre a day, takes only oral maintenance therapy, and leads an active life.โ€

This case, he says, is a powerful reminder that multiple myeloma is no longer a death sentence. โ€œWith timely intervention, targeted drugs, and close monitoring, even elderly patients can bounce back with strength and confidence.โ€

The takeaway? Recognize symptoms early. Donโ€™t dismiss unexplained fatigue, persistent bone pain, or fractures. With the right care, multiple myeloma is not just treatableโ€”itโ€™s beatable.
