New Delhi, 27 March, 2025 โ€“ As temperatures soar and the summer sun intensifies, eye care experts are emphasizing the importance of protecting vision from harmful UV rays, dry air, and excessive sun exposure. With simple yet effective precautions, individuals can safeguard their eyes and maintain optimal eye health during the hot months.

Wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection is one of the most crucial steps to prevent eye damage, as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Pairing sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat provides an additional barrier against UV radiation, especially during outdoor activities.

Hydration is another key factor in summer eye care. Dehydration can lead to dry, irritated eyes, making them more susceptible to environmental damage. Drinking plenty of water and using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can help maintain eye moisture and reduce discomfort. Additionally, limiting direct sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can prevent overexposure to UV rays.

Practicing good hygiene is essential, as increased sweating and exposure to dust and allergens raise the risk of eye infections. Washing hands frequently and avoiding rubbing the eyes can help prevent irritation and contamination. Contact lens users should be extra cautious and avoid wearing lenses while swimming to reduce the risk of infection.

Lastly, routine eye check-ups play a vital role in detecting early signs of eye conditions and ensuring personalized care. Regular visits to an eye specialist can help individuals adopt the best protective measures for their vision.

Dr. Rishi Raj Borah, Country Director, Orbis(India), emphasizes, “During the summer, our eyes are constantly exposed to harsh environmental factors like UV radiation, dry air, and heat, which can lead to discomfort and long-term damage if not properly managed. Simple precautions such as wearing UV-protective sunglasses, staying hydrated, and using lubricating eye drops can make a significant difference in maintaining healthy vision. Additionally, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours and practicing good hygiene can help prevent infections and irritation. Prioritizing eye care is essential, and regular eye check-ups ensure early detection of potential issues, safeguarding long-term eye health.”
