Bengaluru, April 24, 2025 โ€“ Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (KIAB/BLR Airport) continues to build a safe, future-ready, and sustainability-driven aviation ecosystem. Recognised by global bodies for its sustainability initiatives and operational excellence, BLR Airport has received multiple prestigious accolades from Airports Council International (ACI) this year, the gold standard in aviation, reinforcing that responsible, inclusive aviation growth is not just possible, but essential.

At the forefront of these achievements is BLR Airportโ€™s distinction as the first airport in Asia to receive the Level 5 Accreditation under ACIโ€™s Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, effective May 5, 2024. A formal award was presented recently during the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly held in New Delhi. This milestone celebrates an outstanding 95.6% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, with the airport reaching net-zero status (Scope 1 and 2) seven years ahead of its 2030 goal.

The airport also received the Silver Award in the ACI Green Airports Recognition 2025 for the fourth consecutive year under the โ€˜Sustainable Energy at Airportsโ€™ theme in the category of 15โ€“38 million passengers. BLR Airport has previously received the ACI Green Airport Platinum recognition for two consecutive years in 2022 (Carbon Management) and 2023 (Plastics Circularity). This award recognises BIALโ€™s continued progress in renewable energy adoption, climate resilient infrastructure, and sustainable airport management.

Further reinforcing its commitment to operational excellence, BLR Airport was conferred the Gold Award at the inaugural ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Safety Recognition Award 2025. Awarded for its paper โ€œBeyond Complianceโ€, the airport identified key safety challenges and showcased targeted, innovative promotion strategies that delivered measurable improvements โ€” positioning BLR Airport as a model for safety-led airport culture in the region.

Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited, said, “At BLR Airport, sustainability is not a standalone initiativeโ€”it is embedded in our vision, operations, and long-term strategy. These recognitions from ACI affirm the collective effort weโ€™ve made to not only reduce our carbon footprint but also to support a culture of safety, innovation, and community stewardship. Whether itโ€™s transitioning to 100% renewable electricity, achieving net-zero emissions ahead of schedule, or fostering industry collaborations for environmental and social impactโ€”every milestone reflects our belief that aviation and sustainability must progress together. We remain committed to responsible airport development, both in India and on the global stage.”

Airports Council International (ACI) is the global voice of airports, setting the standard for excellence in operations, environmental stewardship, safety, security and innovation. Recognitions from ACI signify not just compliance, but true leadership in shaping a sustainable, secure, and responsible aviation future.

In 2023, BIAL became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, aligning its operations with its ten universal principles. As part of this ongoing partnership, BIAL recently co-hosted โ€œUniting for Nature: A Collaborative Conference on Forest & Water Stewardshipโ€ with the UN Global Compact Network India, bringing together changemakers to explore cross-sector solutions for a sustainable future.

BIALโ€™s sustainability approach is comprehensive and action oriented. From operating on 100% renewable electricity and expanding its electric vehicle fleet, to implementing rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and biodiversity conservation, BLR Airport is embedding sustainability across operations with a long-term lens on climate resilience.

By leveraging the Kempegowda International Airport Foundation (KIAF), BIAL is also focused on community initiatives that have fostered positive change, improved quality of life and created opportunities for growth and wellbeing in the areas around the airport and beyond.

Through continued investment in community development, greening initiatives, safety practices, digital transformation, and industry collaboration, BIAL remains steadfast in its mission to set new benchmarks and reimagine what a truly sustainable airport can be.
