  • From Belpahar Stage to National School of Drama: Sonia Behera Scripts History

Belpahar, Jharsuguda, June 26 (UDN): What began as a young girl’s fascination with a stage performance at a school function in Belpahar has culminated in a historic achievement for Odisha’s theatre community. Twenty-five-year-old Sonia Behera has become the first woman from the state to secure admission to the prestigious three-year Diploma in Dramatics programme at the National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi.

From Belpahar Stage to National School of Drama: Sonia Behera Scripts History

Sonia secured the eighth rank in the All India merit list after scoring 80.05 percentile in the highly competitive admission process. The selection involved multiple stages, including preliminary screening, intensive theatre workshops, practical assessments and personal interviews conducted at the NSD campus in New Delhi between June 14 and 19.

For Sonia, the achievement marks the fulfilment of a dream she had never envisioned when she first stepped into the world of theatre.

“I feel immensely proud. When I started performing, I had never imagined that I would one day study at the National School of Drama. It still feels surreal,” she said.

The eldest among five siblings, Sonia’s journey in theatre began in 2015 after she watched the acclaimed play Lal Paen during a school event in Belpahar. The performance, staged by Jharsuguda-based Mirror Theatre Group, left a profound impact on her and inspired her to join the troupe later that year.

Over the past eleven years, Sonia has established herself as a versatile theatre artiste, performing in several acclaimed productions, including Lal Paen, ULPI, April-27, Badakha Dada, Pachen, Ramadevi, Tor Jhumka, Tor Kiriya, Bhokara Aneka Ranga and Panata Kani.

She also played the lead role in Kaenjuri, a landmark production that entered the record books for a continuous performance lasting 49 hours, 48 minutes and 12 seconds. Her performances in Lal Paen and ULPI, staged across Odisha and other parts of the country, earned her national recognition.

Sonia credited her mother for encouraging her to pursue theatre despite the uncertainties associated with the profession. She also acknowledged the unwavering support and mentorship of Mirror Theatre founder-director Dr Subash Chandra Pradhan and senior members of the troupe, whom she described as instrumental in shaping her artistic journey.

Describing Sonia’s selection as a proud moment for the state, Dr Pradhan said her success demonstrates that talent from smaller towns can compete at the highest level when nurtured with dedication and proper guidance.

Sonia hopes her achievement will inspire aspiring artistes, particularly young women from rural and small-town backgrounds, to pursue their passion fearlessly and believe that national platforms are within their reach.

Mishra, Managing Director, Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), an IACS member classification society, in recognition of the company’s contribution to advancing indigenous maritime capabilities through the development of lifeboats for the maritime sector. The felicitation ceremony was held at the IRS Headquarters in Powai, Mumbai.

SHM Global Launches India’s First Locally Manufactured IRS Type-Approved Lifeboats, Boosting Maritime Manufacturing

The recognition acknowledges SHM Global’s successful development of the KISS 700 and PN95FA totally enclosed fire protected lifeboats, indigenously designed and manufactured in India. Developed in collaboration with Palfinger Marine and backed by type approval certifications from IRS, the lifeboats represent a significant milestone in enhancing India’s self-reliance in critical maritime and offshore infrastructure.

Mr. Praveen K. Mishra, Managing Director, Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) states

“I’d like to congratulate SHM Global on turning their dream into reality. Despite stringent and elaborate IMO requirements, SHM Global achieved full compliance and certification within a short span of time which is a genuinely challenging feat. I encourage other Indian manufacturers in the maritime sector to pursue IRS type approval and become indigenous producers. This reduces our reliance on foreign imports and strengthens India’s self-reliance, a true step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”

The Indian Register of Shipping, India’s leading maritime classification society, plays a key role in setting technical, safety and performance standards for ships and marine systems. Mr. T. Ghosh, Senior Principal Surveyor, Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) said

“I would like to congratulate the SHM team — this was a complex project, as this type of lifeboat has never been built in India before. Saifuddin Hajee’s vision brought to life the PN95FA and KISS 700, both enclosed lifeboats designed for tankers and built to SOLAS standards. With Palfinger as a strong technical partner and SHM Global’s own capability and experience, the boat successfully cleared IRS’s rigorous design appraisal and testing for lifesaving appliances. We’re proud to have reviewed the documentation and finally issued the certificate, taking lifeboat design in India to a new level.”

Mohammed Hajee, CEO, Maritime Safety and Security, SHM Globalsaid

“Marine safety systems are mission critical for maritime operations. This recognition from the Indian Register of Shipping is a matter of pride for SHM Global. It reflects the commitment and efforts of our teams in developing indigenous marine safety solutions in India.”

The Group’s philosophy of designing to meet Indian requirements while building products capable of competing on global standards was witnessed through this project. IRS as well, responded positively to this vision.

The achievement highlights SHM Global’s commitment to strengthening the domestic maritime manufacturing ecosystem through innovation, engineering excellence, and the principles of the Make in India initiative. It also aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision aimed at reducing dependence on imports and building indigenous capabilities in strategic sectors. Till date, SHM Global holds approvals on 8-10 products across categories, with more in the pipeline.

The felicitation by the Indian Register of Shipping reflects the role of regulatory and classification bodies in encouraging indigenous innovation and reinforcing confidence in domestically developed maritime solutions.

New Delhi, June 26: Indian real estate sector attracted private equity (PE) investments worth $1.13 billion in the first half of the year (H1), with the office segment accounting for the bulk of inflows, according to industry data.

The report highlights that the office segment captured around 89% of the total PE investments, reflecting strong investor confidence in Grade-A commercial assets and continued demand for premium office spaces across major urban centres.
