  • Fuel Prices Hiked Across India as Global Crude Surge Pushes Petrol, Diesel Rates Up

New delhi, May 15 (BNP): Fuel prices across India witnessed a sharp increase on Friday, with petrol and diesel rates rising by up to ₹3 per litre amid escalating global crude oil prices and ongoing supply concerns linked to the prolonged West Asia conflict.

    Representational image

The latest revision has pushed petrol prices in Delhi to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel now costs ₹90.67 per litre. Similar increases were reported in several major cities across the country.

Officials said the hike was necessitated by sustained pressure on international energy markets, where crude oil prices have remained volatile due to geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global supply chains. State-run Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have reportedly been facing heavy financial strain as import costs continue to rise.

The increase is expected to impact transportation expenses, logistics operations, and household budgets, potentially contributing to inflationary pressure in the coming weeks. Market experts believe the revision could also lead to a rise in prices of essential commodities due to higher freight costs.

The government maintained that despite the increase, India has continued to shield consumers from the full burden of global fuel price spikes by absorbing a significant portion of the costs over recent months.

The development has triggered political reactions and public concern, with opposition parties criticising the move and warning of its impact on common citizens already dealing with rising living expenses.

Homegrown Luxury Watch Brand Argos Watches Launches Olympus II

Mumbai, India May 15: Homegrown luxury watch brand Argos Watches has launched Olympus II, its latest automatic watch collection, continuing the brand’s strong growth in India’s affordable luxury segment.

Following the rapid sell-out of previous collections including Olympus I and Apollo III, the new launch witnessed over 34,000 pre-launch sign-ups, highlighting the growing demand for premium automatic watches among Indian consumers.

Inspired by Japanese watchmaking, the Argos team travelled to Japan earlier this year as part of the development process behind Olympus II. The collection features Japanese Miyota automatic movement technology, open-heart dials, sapphire crystal glass, fluted detailing, and refined finishing that combine timeless craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Olympus II reflects the brand’s focus on making premium automatic watches more accessible to a new generation of consumers.

The launch also marks Argos Watches’ entry into women’s automatic watches under the Olympus line, carrying forward the same craftsmanship and detailing in a more compact design.

Olympus II is a reflection of what our community has consistently asked for – elevated finishing, stronger movements, and thoughtful design,” shared the team at Argos Watches.

Backed by strong community demand and repeated sold-out launches, Argos Watches is steadily emerging as one of India’s fastest-growing independent watch brands.

  • Duckworth Prestex Introduces Big Date Automatic

    London, May 15, 2026

Duckworth Prestex is proud to announce the Prestex Big Date Automatic: a refined new timepiece that brings together classical watchmaking design with one of horology’s most practical and visually satisfying complications.

With its balanced dial, prominent double-window date display and open-heart detail, the Big Date Automatic reflects a careful approach to proportion, legibility and everyday usability, while continuing the brand’s focus on mechanical character and thoughtful design.

Duckworth Prestex Introduces Big Date Automatic

At the centre of the watch is the oversized big date display, positioned at 12 o’clock. Unlike a standard date window, which often appears as a small and secondary feature, the big date is designed to be read at a glance. Two separate discs work in unison to present the date in a larger, clearer format, creating a display that is both highly legible and visually distinctive.

For founder Neil Duckworth, the appeal of the complication lies in its clarity as much as its mechanical interest. The big date introduces a sense of order to the dial, while also delivering a precise and satisfying change at midnight.

Duckworth explains: “The big date is one of those complications that is incredibly useful but also very pleasing to look at. Because the numerals are larger, you read it instantly. But there is also something very satisfying about the mechanism itself; the way the discs change over together. It adds a moment of precision to the watch each day. And the whole package is just stunning to look at.”

The dial has been designed to support this sense of balance. The big date aperture at 12 o’clock is complemented by an open-heart display at 6 o’clock, offering a view into the movement and introducing a subtle sense of motion. Together, these elements create a symmetrical layout that feels both structured and dynamic.

A guilloché-style textured centre adds depth without overwhelming the design, while applied numerals and heat-blued hands provide contrast and clarity. The result is a dial that remains easy to read yet reveals increasing detail over time.

The Big Date Automatic is housed in a stainless steel case measuring 39.5mm, a size chosen to reflect traditional proportions while ensuring modern wearability. Coin-edge detailing along the case band adds a distinctive touch, drawing on vintage design cues that have long been associated with the Prestex aesthetic.

The watch is paired with a hand-finished leather strap, reinforcing its versatility as a piece that can move easily between formal and everyday settings.

Inside, the watch is powered by an automatic movement with a power reserve of over 48 hours. The inclusion of an open-heart aperture allows the wearer to observe part of the escapement in motion, offering a direct connection to the mechanical nature of the watch.

The Big Date Automatic is priced at £850, with private pre-order access now available. The first 50 pieces will be delivered in June 2026.

Combining a highly legible complication with a balanced dial design and considered proportions, the Big Date Automatic continues Duckworth Prestex’s approach to watchmaking: creating timepieces that are practical, characterful and designed to be worn every day.
  • Gen Z Moving Faster on First Homes as Confidence Builds in Bengaluru Kotak

Stronger job visibility, improving infrastructure and simpler loan processes are helping first‑time homebuyers in Bengaluru take decisions sooner, according to Kotak Mahindra Bank. The bank is seeing more Gen Z and younger millennials move from renting to owning earlier than before.

“Across the country, we’re seeing homebuyers get younger,” said Nakul Saxena, Head – Home Loans, Kotak Mahindra Bank. “In Bengaluru as well, more first‑time buyers are choosing to move earlier instead of waiting for the perfect time. They are clearer about their budget, preferred locations and what matters in a home.”

    What’s driving confidence in Bengaluru

Bengaluru’s strong job market continues to support this shift. Growth in global capability centres, startups is helping professionals build stable incomes earlier in their careers. This is making it easier for many younger buyers to plan for home ownership.

At the same time, ongoing infrastructure work—especially metro expansion and road connectivity projects—is changing how buyers look at the city. Places that earlier felt like long commutes are now within acceptable travel time.

“We are seeing more interest in North and East Bengaluru, where buyers feel they can get better space and still stay connected to work,” Saxena said. “As connectivity improves, people are more open to exploring new locations rather than focusing only on established areas.”

    Changing rent vs EMI mindset

Rents in parts of Bengaluru have risen sharply over the last few years, especially in key job corridors. For many households, the decision is about affordability as well as long‑term certainty.

Owning a home can offer more predictability compared to rising rents in high‑demand areas. As a result, some first‑time buyers are choosing to act sooner rather than waiting indefinitely.

    What buyers really look for

Kotak’s interactions with home loan customers show that while modern amenities and community living continue to attract buyers—especially those upgrading from rentals—the final decision is still based on a few basics:

    • Thorough due diligence of all legal aspects related to the land and the property
    • Getting possession on time
    • Good construction quality
    • Homes with natural light and ventilation

“These are the factors that give buyers comfort,” Saxena said. “Amenities are important, but they also want clarity and confidence in their decision. The final decision depends on how the home will work for the family over time.”

The move enables eligible taxpayers to begin filing returns for income earned during the Financial Year 2025-26. Taxpayers can now download the utilities, fill in income and tax details offline, calculate tax liabilities, generate JSON files, and upload them to the official portal for submission and verification.

The launch marks the beginning of the annual tax filing season and is expected to benefit salaried employees, pensioners, small business owners, and professionals covered under presumptive taxation schemes by allowing them to complete the process well before the deadline.

ITR-1 is applicable for resident individuals with annual income up to ₹50 lakh earned through salary, pension, up to two house properties, and other sources such as bank interest. The form also covers agricultural income up to ₹5,000 and long-term capital gains under Section 112A up to ₹1.25 lakh.

Meanwhile, ITR-4 is designed for resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and firms excluding LLPs with income up to ₹50 lakh opting for presumptive taxation schemes under Sections 44AD, 44ADA, and 44AE.

Officials have advised taxpayers to verify PAN, Aadhaar linkage, bank account details, Form 16, and other financial information before filing returns. The department has also encouraged early filing to avoid last-minute technical issues and penalties.

New Delhi, May 15 (BNP): The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially announced that the re-examination for NEET-UG 2026 will be conducted on June 21, following the cancellation of the earlier exam amid allegations of a paper leak.

NEET UG 2026 Rescheduled for June 21 After Paper Leak Forces Cancellation of Exam

The revised examination date was confirmed on Friday through the agency’s official communication channels, ending days of uncertainty for more than 22 lakh medical aspirants across the country.

The original NEET-UG 2026 examination, held on May 3, was cancelled after reports of an alleged question paper leak surfaced from multiple regions. The Government of India approved the decision to conduct a fresh examination to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the country’s premier medical entrance test.

In its statement, the NTA said the re-examination would be held nationwide on Sunday, June 21, under enhanced security and monitoring arrangements. The agency also urged students and parents to depend only on official notifications for updates regarding admit cards, examination centres, and the admission process.

The cancellation announcement made on May 12 had triggered anxiety among lakhs of candidates awaiting clarity on the future course of the examination. With the fresh schedule now released, preparations for the re-exam process are expected to begin immediately.

NEET-UG serves as the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India, including MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other allied medical programmes.

  • To Fight Cancer, Try Adding Exercise

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, yet recent studies suggest there may be a simple tool to help lower risk and improve outcomes: physical activity.

In a recent study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Rachel Perry, PhD, associate professor of medicine (endocrinology and metabolism) and of cellular and molecular physiology at Yale School of Medicine  demonstrated that voluntary wheel running among mice slowed tumor growth. The research team found that working muscles outcompete tumors for glucose, depriving the tumor of the fuel they need to grow. The study’s findings suggest that exercise can play a part in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

“By exercising, individuals may be able to boost the body’s defenses against cancer, perhaps improving immune function and surveillance,” Perry says. “Exercise may also create a greater window in which chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy can work.”

    Insulin Resistance and Cancer

Research has shown that exercise helps the body reverse insulin resistance, which is a metabolic condition that can cause a range of metabolic and cardiovascular issues. In individuals with insulin resistance, insulin’s signal does not properly trigger the muscle’s glucose transport system. This is largely because ectopic fat, or fat buildup in muscle or liver cells, interferes with the normal signaling pathway.

“Our hypothesis is that insulin resistance is driving many obesity-related cancers,” says Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (endocrinology) and professor of cellular and molecular physiology at YSM.

“Exercise activates an important enzyme, called AMPK, which acts as a cellular fuel gauge and promotes glucose uptake into muscle cells, even when insulin signaling is impaired,” Shulman adds. “In this way, exercise can reverse ectopic lipid-induced insulin resistance in skeletal muscle.”

Integrating Exercise into Cancer Care and Prevention

“The overarching conclusion from the literature showing the benefits of exercise in fighting cancer is remarkably consistent,” says Melinda Irwin, PhD, MPH, Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology (chronic diseases) at Yale School of Public Health and deputy director of Yale Cancer Center.

Metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers likely mediate the effect of exercise on cancer risk and prognosis, research shows. Irwin’s study of exercise and diet-induced weight loss in women with breast cancer found significant reductions in C-reactive protein (a protein associated with inflammation in the body), insulin and leptin levels.

“Across cancer types and across the lifespan, any increase in physical activity is better than none,” Irwin says. “It is never too late to begin exercising, as individuals who become active later in life or after diagnosis still experience meaningful benefits.”

Perry and Irwin both recommend walking regularly, minimizing prolonged sitting, and maintaining muscle strength with simple, home-based exercises.

While healthy lifestyle choices can lower risk, they cannot guarantee that a person will not develop cancer.

“Exercise is not a panacea. It can put a monkey wrench in cancer progression, but it will never treat cancer as a monotherapy,” says Perry. “Even so, it still has beneficial effects all over the body.”
